51- Prizren kilim

Description: An amazing example of a Prizren regional piece. A multifunctional piece, this was made by a bride for her husband's family. It would have served as a seating and/or sleeping mat, a furniture cover, and/or as a Muslim prayer mat. Unusually, for this type, the four-sided fringe is in a restrained aubergine color. This piece is consistent with other Prizreni region weavings in that geometric shapes dominate with the square wreath patterns rotated at 45 degrees, each bound by white, yellow, and aubergine. Concentric squares make up the wreath design and contain the following colors: yellow, black, pink, green, sky blue, white, navy blue. There is no border pattern on the long sides, but the short sides have a nice, small trip of multicolored rectangles encased in yellow as the border. The fringe was added after completion. This was made on a horizontal loom in a mountain village.
