This special piece originates from the south Albanian town of Drenova which is near Korce. The town was formerly heavily populated by the Vlach ethnic-minority and the pattern, which is called the 'open and close' pattern, may originate from their traditional designs. This pattern is not found anywhere else and is rarely seen. Closer examination of this piece shows tesselation, meaning that there is only one shape in red, repeated throughout the deep indigo or black central field. The entire kilim, in just two colors, is edged with a red serrated strip and the whole is made entirely of hand dyed wool using natural dyes. Abrash is clearly evidence througout due to different dye batches. This is in excellent condition, considering its age and is a collector's item.
