One of the glories of our collection, this piece from the southern city of Korce features two well-known patterns from the area: the Tree of Life and the 'bread loaf' motif. The entire kilim has a red border, differing in thickness on opposite sides. A thick border of abrashed green supports a Tree of Life holding 15 mirrors or frames of what is likely winged snakes or serpents. A beautiful, thin vine in red and a dark band separate the decorated green border from the central field. The loaf pattern in the center is a version of the welcoming wreath motif. There are 8 bands holding five loaves each and 7 bands of 6 loaves. The bands of 7 loaves are wonderfully made in two different color patterns; the whole could not be more balanced and complex! Clearly made for home use and not for export, it is made of three panels, expertly joined together. We know of no other examples combining these elements and this is the only winged serpant we have come across in any kilim anywhere.
