Balkan Kilims
Balkans
Mid 20th century
This piece is either a copy of a kilim from North West Bulgaria, or originates from there, specifically from the area of Chiprovtsi. Kilims patterns from Chiprovtsi were popular throughout the Balkans. The typical, strong red central field is decorated with 147 'devil's knees'. The beautiful black contrasting border features 12 behives or bees on the shorter sides and 13 of them on the longer side. A serrated white band extends the border on each long side. Finally, a thin red border encases the whole, bringing symmetry and balance that matches the central field.
